Location:
The Santa Ynez Valley is located inland from Santa Barbara just over the Santa Ynez Mountains and parallels the coastline that runs east to west.  Geographically speaking this is a rather large area that encompasses the central portion of Santa Barbara County.  We will focus on the townships located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley consisting of Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Ballard, Solvang and Buellton.  The renown of this area has grown since the seventies based on ranching operations and vineyards; today the Santa Ynez Valley is known around the world as Santa Barbara´s wine country.  These areas lie north west of Santa Barbara in a triangular shaped area bordered by Highway 154 to the east and north, Highway 246 to the south and Highway 101 on the west.

Each of these locations while not very far from each other have distinct histories and cultural charm.  Santa Ynez embraces the old west and indeed there are vast ranches, agricultural holdings and the Chumash Indian Reservation.  Los Olivos was once a stage coach stop where the rail lines from the north ended and travelers continued their journey overland to Santa Barbara, now they are in the heart of wine country and feature art galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms.  Solvang was originally settled by Danish settlers from the Midwest and today their roots are reflected in their architecture, bakeries and hospitality.  Buellton is a more contemporary town whose roots sprang up when auto travel began to bring people through here as they drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Points of Interest:
The Santa Ynez Valley is one of California´s great areas of natural beauty.  Highway 154 takes you from Santa Barbara through the Santa Ynez Valley and has been designated as one of the state´s most scenic routes.  Here are some of the highlights: Lake Cachuma and the Cachuma County Park, the San Rafael Mountains and the San Rafael Wilderness area, a wide variety of wineries, the Chumash Casino, the Santa Ynez Carriage Museum, the Santa Ynez Mission, the Alisal Ranch and Golf Course, Rancho San Marcos Golf Course and the La Purisima Golf Course.
