Montecito, California is located about 96 miles north of Los Angeles and 3 miles south of Santa Barbara. Montecito is known for its exclusive beaches, private golf clubs and luxury resorts. There are two modest but very chic villages that anchor this staid community.
When the Spanish first settled Santa Barbara in the 1700's, the area known as Montecito (little mountain), was divided up and awarded to the soldiers of the Presidio as payment for their conscription. The soldiers and their families who lived here carved out a meager existence in an environment that was overgrown, inhabited by predators such as bear and mountain lions, and comprised of poor agrarian resources. Today Montecito has become one of the country’s premier residential neighborhoods.
The ocean front properties are very limited and consequently bring premium prices. The central area of Montecito known as the ‘Golden Quadrangle’ is the area where many of the grand estates were established during the last century. Today most of these estates have been broken up providing many exceptional locations featuring panoramic ocean views or beautiful garden settings. Montecito’s rural areas have evolved into attractive settings that are in much demand and are only a short drive to the villages.
